Adult Hockey Skills – Passing The Torch

To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high

As we head into the week of Remembrance Day those timeless words, taken from the World War I poem In Flanders Fields by John McRae, always ring true for me. Those same words also have a connection to the world of hockey, inspiring generations of Montreal Canadiens players from the walls of their dressing room in the old Forum, and now the Bell Centre.

Another passing of a torch, of sorts, has happened in the Ottawa hockey community as the Adult Hockey Skills (AHS) program, first started in 2009 by then Carleton University student (not to mention varsity hockey team player) John Gleeson, has been handed over to Ryan Medel to continue the task of helping adult recreational hockey players take their game to the next level.

Commercial Style Hockey Photos with the Men’s Ravens

The vast majority of hockey shooting that I do is game action. This requires one to shoot  from outside the ice surface (i.e. outside the boards) and use whatever ambient light exists in the arena … usually bad. And as far as the image content goes, well you take whatever comes your way. But over the last few years I have had the opportunity to do some commercial style hockey photography where I can have far more control of the image creation process. My association with the Carleton University Men’s Varsity Hockey team has given me access to these situations three time now, the most recent being in September of this year when the team unveiled their new uniforms. With three of these shoots under my belt, it is time to document the process.

In this article I provide some samples of the images that were made and a description of some of the techniques that were used.

Carleton University Men’s Ravens 2012/2013 Mid Season Review

I won’t presume that I am qualified to review the Carleton University men’s varsity hockey Ravens from a hockey perspective, but I do like a lot about what I see in their team game this season. Currently in 8th place in the national CIS ranking, I guess many of  the experts see a lot of good in their game as well. I do think, however, that I am qualified, but perhaps somewhat biased, to review the images that I have captured from the home opener to the end of 2012, and the first home game of 2013 against McGill on January 11. On my dunnePhoto facebook page I shared this link to a gallery of images of my mid season review up to the end of 2012. In this post I will show and discuss some of those classic hockey images, but also a few other types of shots as well.  So let’s talk hockey and photography by jumping into the rest of this article !

Ottawa Minor Hockey Fall 2012

I have been really busy shooting Carleton Ravens hockey this fall, so I have not done as much minor hockey was would normally be the case. I probably should have posted some of these photos earlier. I have done some competitive (Ottawa Sting, Gloucester Rangers) and some house league (Bytown League and Nepean Minor Hockey Association). Anyway, here is a collection of some of my favourite minor hockey shots from the first half of the 2012 season.
